Hawaiian Barbecue

This is a menu for a Hawaiian barbecue restaurant in pasadena called L and L Hawaiian barbecue. On the menu is a photograph of a woman sipping a drink and behind her in the distance is the ocean and tall buildings. The buildings in the background don't convince the viewer that that particular area is in Hawaii as the rest of the photograph  ( the ocean and woman ) would have you to believe.  What should be behind the woman is the beach along with palm trees.

Cardiel

This is a skateboard design by Antihero skateboards for one of their riders John Cardiel. The board features a man hiding half of his face with a red handkerchief. But the word Cardiel is spelled out in the shape of the handkerchief.  The white space around the man allows the viewer to better see the man while the green space around that brings out the red text. That particular shade of green could be darker to bring the red out more.

Squirrel Cage Bulb

This is a light bulb package for the company Globe Electric. The packaging features curved designs on the corners as well as just above and below the name of the bulb. Around the edge of the entire box is a manila frame. In the center is a picture of the light bulb while on. The background is dark grey with thin long stripes of light grey running the length of the package. As the stripes get close to the bulb they end in such a way that what you are left with is a dark grey oval shape around the light bulb. The empty space around the bulb adds depth bringing the bulb to the foreground of the design. The curved design in the corners, the long close thin grey stripes, when put together with the picture of the bulb create a design that is inspired by worlds fairs at the turn of the century when light bulbs were not so commonly used. When the viewer looks at the design of the bulb and name , it can be said that is the way Globe Electric wanted it to be. An overall good design.

Kindness of Strangers

This is the readers digest cover for October 2015. On the cover there is a mysterious arm reaching out from a hole in the wall holding a bouquet of flowers. The wall itself is red where as the area behind the wall is orange which doesn't do to well at distinguishing itself from the arm but the red area does define clearly where the am ends and the wall begins as well as the flowers. The shading on the arm does make up for the color issue and helps distinguish the arm from the orange background and ad depth to the cover. Overall the concept is good but that is only when you see the title of this months readers digest which is "kindness of strangers". The title is no where to be found on the cover which can lead the viewer to perceive the image in a different way. There is plenty of space near the bottom of the cover for the title. The title should be placed there in white.

Water bottle

This is water from a Korean market. The light blue color of the bottle and label work well.  The white bubbles on the label are appropriate. Adding more depth to the bubbles would improve the design.

Fall Season

This is a Starbucks seasonal cup bringing in the fall. The yellows orange and red are appropriate and the sparse use of color accents the pinecones and leaf design on the cup. Thereisn't anything that I would change.

Banc of California

This is a billboard in Santa Monica advertising for Banc of California. This billboard is confusing. Bank is spelled Banc rather than bank. There are  two framed portraits of men on opposite sides of the billboard in suits which leads a person to think that these men are high ranking executives. It's because of the  framed portraits the figures below seem out of place. A bit down under the Banc of California text in small font is the text "proud partner of Tender Greens." That's when you notice next to each headless figure in even smaller font is there name and title where you find out that one of them works for the bank and the other works for tender greens. In the few seconds a person looks at a billboard this information needs to be clearer and can be by enlarging the print near the bottom of the billboard and not framing the portraits. Also by having just the banker wearing the suit.

To be human

This s a skateboard graphic for Magenta skateboards . The design features a open sphere in gold and a fox on top of a black background. Below each image are two words etre below the sphere and human below the fox. Etre is a French irregular verb, it's a conjunction that translates to "to be". So the text below translated to English reads "to be human". The fox looks toward this open world with curiosity, a trait that is part of being human. scaling down the size of the fox would allow for the fox to fit with in the world right now they are on to equal terms.

Hole Mole

This is a poster for a Mexican restaurant in Long Beach called Hole Mole (pronounced holy moly ). The poster is meant to notify customers of the restaurants instagram account. The poster contains a school of light blue fish with a single orange fish. The poster hangs on a wall that is a light shade of blue and the poster itself is predominantly blue a fact that draws attention to the orange fish on  the poster. The text on the poster says "hey there follow us on instagram" while the school of fish form an arrow with the orange fish in front as if the light blue fish were customers and the orange fish was the restaurant. The orange fish resembles gold fish crackers to much however. Changing the color would fix that. Red would be a good choice. It is still noticeable and doesn't gold fish crackers.

Bus Line

The idea is to notify the general public of the metros increase of more bus lines throughout the city. What they did was produce a bus ad that shows a intersection in which a bus is crossing. Had they not specifically added the text "more connections in the works" in the upper right corner of the ad the message would have been lost. What they check update do to make this more clear is show the tail end of another bus going down the street perpendicular to the first bus. By depicting more buses in the ad the viewer can infer that there are more  bus lines in the city.

Fraud

The idea here is to design a poster warning employees against committing worker's comp fraud. What they choose to do is show a close up picture of hands in cuffs and part of a prison jumpsuit. Just under is a black rectangle with white print that says " commit worker's comp fraud get a new outfit." Below this bar is red print that says "don't do it, don't tolerate it, report it." What would improve this poster would be to include the red print in the black area or make it larger. Also the hands look like they belong to two different people. Adding some light to the hand on the right or rotating the hand on the left would make them look similar.

Trader Joe Eggs

The idea here is to project an image of happy and healthy  chickens that produce good quality eggs. On the package  a barn door opens out to wide open green field where the chickens can spend their day's.  Since the packaging specifically says "cage free" this is a obvious requirement in the design. The problem is the color of the chicken and rooster. Common
Knowledge in America is that chickens are white and rooster are brown. Yellow can look sickly and odd on things we don't expect to be yellow and to have them match the color of the buildings is odd. The color should be changed to differentiate them.

Rapsody The Idea of Beautiful

This is an album cover from one of my favorite artists. The photograph works both as the name of the album and also poses the question what is the idea of beautiful. In the photograph are two children in a lower class neighborhood. In this moment one is standing with her left arm on her hip and the other is sitting in the grass and both are looking toward the camera. Each child has deformed lips and is not what you would expect to ever be beautiful. Yet these two girls don't shy away from the camera, they are who they are and though their environment may not say it, their appearance may not say it, their eyes look straight at you and say we are happy we are beautiful. The problem for this cover might have been the placing of the title.  Placing the title at the top causes you to lose some of the environment surrounding the girls. Placing it at the bottom can be harder to notice and read. By placing the title in the middle right next to both girls helps the viewer relate the title of the album to the photograph and think of the question, what is the idea of beautiful.

Crepes Bonaparte

This is a  food truck I passed by on campus that I think has a good logo. The design is  just a few curved lines thick and thin, two dash marks, and a circle, to depict a napoleon like figure. This along with the name of the truck and a series of rectangles reads as elegant. The  light red color of the rectangles and the spacing between  gives a light airy freshly baked feeling. The light red color plays on ones a sense of sight and smell as if a was finished and now having just been pulled from the oven, the door isn't closed yet and you see inside the oven and smell the very fresh crepe. The distinction of a darker red in the text Crepes helps accentuate this feeling while simultaneously being distinct from the rectangles above and the Bonaparte text. The logo might be improved by framing the bottom similarly to the top.  Yet over all the concept is simple and easy to read.
This is a small billboard I came across in South LA while out with my friends that I didn't really understand. Which I'm not exactly sure is good or bad. Billboards are intended to be seen by an individual passing by at 35mph or 65mph so you would think the message has to be instantly clear. This on the other hand leaves to much unsaid but that could be what was intended. The concept behind this seems to be maybe some motorcycle rider with their head so covered by bugs that it's all you really see and I'm not sure what to infer from that. What is the message we are to take away from this? It could be purposely unclear so that the viewer will want to know more beyond the billboards statement "giving me a ride is the road to ruin" at which glancing at the website hungry pests.com makes it slightly clearer. But because of the confusing elements in the billboard I think that makes it easy to miss the website address. The concept of the winding road and the bugs covering the helmet do tie in to the text of the billboard but as a whole, when I passed by this the message wasn't instantly clear which is bad. .
